We usually make honey biscuits in different shapes for Christmas, other holidays and celebrations. As we are approaching Valentine's Day, hearts in any shape are in demand. Maybe honey biscuits can make your day too.
Honey biscuits - ginger bread |
Slovenia is known around the worl for its beekeepers, honey production and products made of honey. Special place among those products holds the craft of making ginger bread, which has a long history and is still alive in some parts of Slovenia - see the photos. Some of them are really a pieces of art.
Here is a very traditional basic recipe for honey biscuits. You cannot go wrong.
1 tsp of ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp of ground dry ginger
1/2 tsp of ground cloves or use mixture of spices for ginger bread
1 tsp of baking soda
100 g of sugar / I am using brown cane sugar
150 g of honey / cooked and cooled down
300 g of butter
2 eggs
1 egg white
1 tbsp of hot water
or/and
Chocolate
First make dough. Put all dry ingredients in a bowl and mix them together. Add honey, butter and eggs. Knead the dough and put it to rest. It should reast for at least 1hour. You can also leave it for a few hours or over night.
For making biscuits, put the dough on the worktop covered with flour. Roll the dough out to the thickness of a small finger and cut the biscuits with models.
Bake the biscuits in the oven at 180 degrees for about 10 to 15 minutes.
When you finish baking keep the biscuits aside to cool down. During this time you can prepare things for decoration.
For the white decoration, mix all the ingredients well to get a white paste. You can use it as a pencil or as a cover for the surface of biscuits.
You can also buy coloured eatable pastes and use them.
Or you can melt the chocolate with some milk and butter to get a chocolate paste. In short, use your imagination and have fun playing.
