CARNIVAL SWEET MICE - SPOON DOUGHNUTS

From pagan times Carnival season is connected with transition from winter to spring. For that reason Carnival processions and festivals are held with the masks to make winter and bad spirits go away. Slovenia has some traditional masks among which Kurent is now considered to be UNESCO’s world cultural heritage.

POTICA - MOST FAMOUS SLOVENIAN CAKE

Slovenian best known and most famous festive cake around the world is "Potica" - traditional rolled cake. It is made of sweet yeast dough and different fillings - such as walnut, cottage cheese or cream with tarragon filling and many more. There are even savoury varieties. Mostly it is made for big celebrations and important holidays like Christmas and Easter.

BUHTELJNI - LEAVENED POCKETS STUFFED WITH JAM

Buhteljni are very traditional Slovenian dessert made of soft sweet leavened dough stuffed with jam inside. They can be served as a "sweet breakfast" or dessert with coffee or tea. We usually made them as a dessert for  lunch in winter time after some hot pot soup or stew for example barley soup or ričet, mushrooms soup, jota etc.
